best mosquito control for yard

Commonly Asked Questions About Mosquito Control

When trying to find the best mosquito control for your yard, it’s best to do your research. There are a lot of myths out there when it comes to the best mosquito control practices, so it is important to know what is best for protecting you and your family.

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about mosquito control:

Are citronella candles effective?

Some of the most commonly used DIY mosquito control products are citronella candles. Many people surround their outdoor patios and porches with these candles in order to keep mosquitoes at bay when spending time outside. However, they are not as effective as you might think.

Citronella is only about 50% effective, which is significantly less than other natural products such as oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE).

What is the best kind of insect repellent to use?

While there are many different types of insect repellent on the market, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend using EPA-registered products with certain active ingredients for maximum protection.

Here is a list of active ingredients in insect repellents that provide the best protection against mosquitoes, according to the CDC:

  • DEET
  • Picaridin
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE)
  • IR3535
  • Para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone

Why do mosquitoes bite some people more than others?

There are a variety of factors at play when a mosquito is searching for a blood meal. Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide, which we naturally exhale, as well as lactic acid and octenol, which are both found in human breath and sweat. So, if you are sweating more, you are more likely to be bitten by a mosquito.

In addition to being attracted to carbon dioxide, lactic acid, and octenol, studies have shown that mosquitoes are also attracted to certain blood types more than others.

According to a 2019 study, mosquitoes preferred feeding on Type O blood more than other blood types. Another study found that mosquitoes landed on those with Type O blood significantly more often than those with Type A blood.

What attracts mosquitoes to my yard?

There are a number of reasons your yard could be attracting a large number of mosquitoes. For example, mosquitoes need water in order to lay their eggs.

So, if your yard has any areas of standing water, even if it is a small amount of water, be sure to get rid of them. Getting rid of standing water is one of the best ways to deter mosquitoes from your property.

Here are some common backyard items and areas where standing water tends to build up:

  • Tire swings
  • Kiddie pools
  • Trash can lids
  • Wheelbarrows
  • Birdbaths (If you have a birdbath in your yard, make sure to replace the water in it at least once a week to keep mosquitoes away)

Now that you know what attracts mosquitoes and what is effective (or not effective) in keeping them away, you can start living mosquito-free.
