Mosquito Authority can help reduce ticks on your property with our tick control solutions. We offer best- in-class tick barrier control services to reduce the number of ticks on a long-term basis. Our treatment methods are rooted in science, and disrupt the life cycle of ticks.

Another tool in our arsenal of tick disease prevention is our tick tubes. These biodegradable tick tubes are easy to install and feature minimal environmental impact. No matter your pest problem, Mosquito Authority has a solution to make your outdoor space tick-free.

Aside from our tick control solutions, there are several other strategies you can use to prevent tick bites. First, you’ll want to make sure your landscaping isn’t conducive to increasing tick habitats. You’ll want to make sure you clear your yard from tall grasses and brush, utilize wood chip barriers to restrict tick migration, and remove any yard trash that may give ticks a place to hide.

Second, you’ll want to make sure you’re spending time outdoors safely. It’s a good idea to treat your clothing and gear with permethrin, an insecticide, to prevent ticks from settling on your clothing. There are other insect repellents you can use on your skin to further protect against tick bites.

Finally, the best tactic for preventing tick bites is to perform a thorough body check on yourself, your family, and your pets, as well as thorough clothing and gear checks, when you return indoors. You’ll want to remove any ticks that are found immediately.

Tick-Related Illnesses in Humans

While there are over 900 species of ticks, only a few types of ticks are known to bite humans and transmit disease. Tick bites are dangerous, and tick-related illnesses can range from mild to life-threatening.

While ticks are most active during warmer months, exposure can occur year-round. No one wants to deal with ticks. Not only can they be tricky to remove, they can transmit many illnesses. In the US, these illnesses include:

  • Anaplasmosis
  • Babesiosis
  • Borrelia mayonii infection
  • Borrelia miyamotoi infection
  • Bourbon virus
  • Colorado tick fever
  • Ehrlichiosis
  • Heartland virus
  • Lyme disease
  • Powassan disease
  • Rickettsia parkeri rickettsiosis
  • Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF)
  • STARI (Southern tick-associated rash illness)
  • Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF)
  • Tularemia
  • 364D rickettsiosis

Is There a Difference Between Lyme Disease and Tick-Bite Fever?

If you’ve found you’ve been bitten by a tick, you’ll want to pay close attention to your symptoms. The effects can start as soon as three days after the bite, but you may not see an onset until up to 30 days post-bite.

It’s a good idea to retain the tick after you’ve removed it, in case you develop symptoms and require testing. Some of the hallmarks of being bitten by ticks with Lyme disease include a bull’s-eye rash and sudden knee pain, but other symptoms can include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Severe headache and neck stiffness
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Swollen lymph nodes

To distinguish between tick-bite fever and Lyme disease, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Tick-bite fever features some of the same symptoms as Lyme disease (fatigue, headache, fever, and muscle pain), but the onset of symptoms is often quicker. Rashes with tick-bite fever tend to be smaller and rounder, and are usually limited to one outbreak. Antibiotics can help relieve the symptoms of tick-bite fever sooner.

Evaluation of a Tick Bite for Possible Lyme Disease

While it’s impossible to prevent Lyme disease after a tick bite, you can monitor your symptoms closely to determine what stage of infection you may have. One of the first indicators of Lyme disease is a rash. These rashes have the appearance of a bull’s-eye, and are round, red, and at least two inches in diameter. The rash will get bigger over the course of a few days, and may grow up to 12 inches in diameter. It may be warm to the touch, and isn’t usually itchy or painful. Rashes can show up on any part of your body.

The best way to determine if the tick bite is indeed Lyme disease or not is to visit a doctor. They will diagnose you based on your symptoms and exposure risk, and may also run a blood test to determine if the infection is present.

What Do Tick Bites Look Like on the Skin?

Tick bites on humans can unfortunately look like other insect bites if the tick is no longer attached. The bites can also vary from person to person, as each of our immune systems is unique and reacts differently. Redness or red spots are common, as are rashes. While the bite itself doesn’t usually hurt, you may experience increased itchiness in the affected area.

The best way to prevent tick bites is to utilize tick control services from Mosquito Authority on your property. We have the most effective treatments to keep you and your family safe from ticks and the illnesses they can carry.
